How air coolers actually work outdoors

An evaporative cooler pulls hot outside air through a wet honeycomb pad. As the water evaporates, it absorbs heat, and the air leaving the unit is typically 8 to 12°C cooler than the ambient temperature. In dry heat, the effect is dramatic. That is why the technology, sometimes called a swamp cooler or desert cooler, is common across the Gulf, in India, and in the American southwest. The underlying physics is straightforward, and it uses a fraction of the electricity a compressor-based AC would draw.

The catch is humidity. On a coastal Dubai evening in August, when humidity climbs above 70%, evaporation slows and the temperature drop is smaller, maybe 4 to 6°C. Getting the right number of units is half the job. The other half is where you put them. Cold air is heavy and drops. Angle matters more than sheer power.

• Position coolers at the edges of the guest zone, pointing across the space, never directly at faces.
